Summer Exhibition

A Photographer's Eye: Donald McKay's 1950s is an exhibition of 24 photographs by photographer Donald J. McKay taken during the 1950s.

A Photographer's Eye: Donald McKay's 1950s is the new temporary exhibition at Akaroa Museum. It celebrates the photography of Donald J. McKay.

Don began his photographic career in 1949 when he returned to his family's Le Bons Bay farm after finishing high school. This was his home until mid-1961 when he moved to Christchurch and became a medical photographer at Burwood Hospital.

The exhibition is made up of a selection of 24 photographs of local people and places during the 1950s, when Don was Banks Peninsula's local resident photographer.

The photographs show his knack of capturing unguarded moments in his portraits, an interplay of formal and candid, and an underlying creativity that runs through his work.
