French Connections is an exhibition that opened at Easter and runs through to September 2025.
In Akaroa, of all places in New Zealand, we are likely to remember there was a French influence early in the colony. However, the full extent of France’s ongoing cultural influence through the nineteenth century may just surprise you.
French Connections is the work of Akaroa Museum's guest curator, Emma Johnson.
Her research has uncovered a neglected heritage of writing, translating, reading and publishing in French in this country.
It's a story that adds a new layer to our understanding of "French" Akaroa and of the colonial culture of this country.
French Connections opened at Easter and runs through to September 2025.
10.30am to 4.30pm,
seven days a week.
